The classic L-shaped kitchen. The 10-foot by 10-foot layouts found in most small to medium-sized homes. This kitchen layout is naturally open, which gives it ample appeal for homeowners; however, when it comes to remodeling, the trick is to update and keep the open feel. The layout is traditionally one or two adjacent walls in the design. Some L-shaped kitchens use both walls and feature banks of upper and base cabinets on each wall or a tall wall of cabinets on one leg.

The perfect working triangle

L-shaped kitchens have the perfect floor plan for multiple entrances that do not interfere with a working triangle. The working triangle of stove, refrigerator, and sink often has plenty of space between them to avoid traffic jams. The L-shaped kitchen is perfect for storage and possible positions for your appliances with right corners and end cabinets. Because most L-shaped kitchens open up into the dining area or living spaces, you can easily add a dining room table or kitchen island for dining and entertaining.

You can easily use full or compact-sized refrigerators, dishwashers, or ranges. To keep the look congruent with the cabinets, you’ll want to be sure the same height as the countertop.

By incorporating a kitchen island, you have added space for food preparation and storage without taking up valuable floor space.

The L-shape is not perfect for every kitchen floor plan.

In a large kitchen, the appliances are too spread out with the L-shaped layout. It is also tricky for more than one cook to be working in an L-shaped kitchen as the appliances are often close to each other or cause the cook’s back to be turned toward the open room while cooking.

The L-shaped kitchen gives homeowners and designers a lot of possibilities when it comes to storage and function. The kitchen island works wonders as extra storage and seating, especially if the dining area is smaller. It also creates a barrier between the living space and the kitchen, giving a natural break in the rooms.

  1. I like how you mentioned that an L-shaped kitchen gives possibilities for function with a kitchen island. My wife and I want to start remodeling our kitchen this summer and we’re narrowing down on an L-shaped kitchen. I’ll be sure we have a good island as well that fits within the dimensions.
