Framed Vs. Frameless…Which Will You Choose?

There are two types of there are two types of construction to consider when choosing types of cabinets: Framed or Frameless cabinetry.

Both have unique advantages and provide endless design possibilities.

As you decide which type of cabinet construction is right for you, here are some things to consider:

Framed Cabinets

Traditionally, American cabinet manufacturers use framed construction.

This type of cabinet construction have rails and stiles that form a 1-1/2″ face “frame” at the front of the cabinet box.

This frame gives added dimension to the door front and resembles a flat picture frame that is attached to the door.

Frameless Cabinets

Cabinet manufacturers in Europe use frameless cabinet construction.

Frameless cabinets have become popular with American homeowners looking for a contemporary design. Frameless cabinetry, called “full access” cabinetry because it offers greater accessibility by eliminating the face frame.

This cabinetry relies on thicker box construction for stability.

Hinges are attached directly to the sides of the cabinet box and only full overlay doors can be used.
