There are usually five kitchen shapes: Galley, U-Shaped, L-Shaped, one wall, or G-shaped.

Once you have a floor plan you can decide on placement for your refrigerator, sink and stove. These are the most important elements in your kitchen. With these in place, you can plan the rest of your kitchen design.

A Galley kitchen has cabinets and appliances on two opposing walls. This is the type of kitchen you are most likely to find on a boat. The Galley shape is great for small spaces. However, in a larger space you can install extras like islands to help with storage and seating. It is an easy design to work with in your kitchen without having to walk between areas.

Another good choice for small spaces, is the one wall layout. All cabinets and appliances get fitted to one wall. It is a compact design and very easy to work within. It has a simple workflow and works well with open-plan rooms, studios, or smaller kitchens. The one wall kitchen design still needs to be well thought out to ensure usability. It is important to pay close attention to the placement of the refrigerator, stove and sink.
